     This past week my homily centered on our stewardship of the sacred rites (i.e.
the Mass).  I made the point that the
sacred rites are not ours to do with as we might wish, but are given to us as a
sacred trust by the Church for our salvation and the salvation of the whole
world.  I made the point, in passing,
that even (especially?) weddings and funerals are not OUR weddings and funerals.

As I sat looking around at the great beauty of this church I couldn’t help but think about all of the grace that has flowed out from that place. Patrick Umberger.  It was a not a complete loss however.  At least they did a good job of making the case, whether it was their intention or not, that the survival of a parish and the Church as a whole is not dependant on the virtues or even continued service of any one priest or other pastoral minister.
